Opt-out organ donation law presuming consent 'had little impact'

1+ hour, 33+ min ago (1250+ words) A landmark law to increase the number of organ donors has had little impact 10 years after it was introduced, according to a charity and an academic. Wales was the first UK nation to adopt the "soft" opt-out legislation on 1 December 2015, which presumes a person's consent to donate their organs when they die, unless they or their family have indicated otherwise. Conner Marshall's mother said consenting to his organ donation wishes following his murder that same year had been "humbling" despite the "stomach-wrenching" thought of losing him. The NHS Blood and Transplant service (NHSBT) said presumed consent was not a silver bullet to closing the gap between donation and transplantation. The organ donor consent rate increased by about 15% during the first three years of the opt-out law, but dropped to its lowest level in a decade last year. The Covid pandemic,…...

Guernsey islanders offered walk-in HIV testing

5+ hour, 58+ min ago (308+ words) An island sexual health clinic is offering free HIV testing ahead of World AIDS day on Monday. The States of Guernsey said it would be running a confidential walk-in clinic at the Orchard Centre where people could also ask for information about preventative treatments, safe sex advice and for any support. It said the day would be an "opportunity to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS", a virus that weakens the immune system and increases the risk of serious illness. Dr Nicola Brink, Lead HIV Clinician and Director of Public Health, said early detection was "essential" for ensuring access to treatment and preventing the spread of HIV. She said: "Individuals who are diagnosed with HIV early will have better health outcomes and can lead long and healthy lives. "If a person is having effective treatment for HIV with an undetectable…...

North Tyneside GP says debt stress causing mental health issues

8+ hour, 27+ min ago (389+ words) A GP says patients are presenting with mental health problems because of stress they feel over their levels of personal debt. According to Citizens Advice, north-east England has the second highest number of people who require professional assistance with debt problems - only London is higher. Debt charity StepChange said in 2024 the highest concentration of their clients were in the North East, with 37 clients per 10,000 adults. Dr Kamlesh Sreekissoon, who works as a GP in North Tyneside, said people were juggling "three or four jobs" in the build up to Christmas in order to manage and subsequently struggling with their mental health. The most common reason for personal debt as reported by Stepchange's North East clients is a rise in the cost of living (19.3%) and a lack of control over finances (19%). Both these statistics outstrip the UK figures of 17.7% and 17.9% respectively....

Leeds maternity units criticised on care of black and Asian women

9+ hour, 51+ min ago (434+ words) The treatment of black and Asian women has been criticised in a report on hospital maternity services. NHS England released an equality and diversity review of maternity and neonatal services at St James's University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary this week. It found babies from black and ethnic minority communities were more likely to be born prematurely and need admission to neonatal units, while new mums were left "traumatised" and staff faced bullying and discrimination at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS trust. The trust, which is already facing an independent inquiry into maternity standards, has apologised and promised "cultural change". "Maternal outcomes for black and Asian women remain poorer compared to white women, mirroring national trends," the report said. It added that women from asylum-seeking backgrounds also faced "poor communication, lack of cultural awareness and challenges navigating the system". The report…...

The event will include a "powerful" session with patients who have benefitted from the techniques and technologies, as they share their stories and experiences, organisers said. The showcase, which is open to the public, will be hosted by the University Hospital North Midlands Charity and held at Keele's School of Medicine on Wednesday. Professor Ajith George, consultant head and neck surgeon and thyroid lead at Royal Stoke University Hospital, who is also honorary professor of surgery at Keele, will give guests a guided tour of the technology.
